Looking for co-regulated genes

Another useful way to mine DNA microarray information is to compare transcription profiles between a set of experiments. This is the goal of the "search by transcription profile" link in yMGV homepage. Using this option, we compared the effect of zinc starvation (Lyons et al., 2000) to a deletion of the YFH1 gene encoding a mitochondrial protein responsible for iron binding and storage (Foury et al., 2001). We found 17 genes that are up regulated by more than 3 fold in both experiments.

Vent diagram from the comparison of the two experiments describe above.

This reveals a common response to zinc and iron starvation in yeast that includes stress proteins (Yro2p, Hsp30p, Ygp1p, Gph1p), metal transporters (Sit1p, Ftr1p, Arn1p, Fet3p, Enb1p) together with unknown genes that were thought to be specifically involved in iron uptake (Ydr534p, Yor382p, Yor383p, Tis11p). This suggests cross-talks between iron and zinc homeostasis.
